Communications Manager - Home-based with some travel, W Midlands

Salary: Negotiable
Sector: Marketing/Category
Location: W Midlands
Job type: Permanent

Job Description

You would probably remember this as the job when it all came together for you. This food business is a major player in their product sector and because they recognise the increasing importance of Internal and External comms to the business they have created this brand new role, with no-one's shoes to fill.

Maybe you are in another corporate business, doing internal communications but want to control external as well; maybe you are doing both but you are still a small fish in a big pond and want more autonomy; or perhaps you are looking to go in-house and get off the PR agency hamster-wheel of Senior Account Executive / Account Manager / Senior Account Manager titles (but your job never changes).

Regardless: if you got this role you would be able to make good use of your internal / external comms experience; you would still get to manage external photography/graphic design agencies; and you would make a real difference to a multi-site business that takes you, and what you say, seriously.

It's hard to say for certain how much you will be travelling to their UK sites, attending whole-company workshops, meeting agencies and going to trade shows (because no-one has held this role before), but the Communication Director thinks maybe about 25% of your time (?). There is a £5500 car allowance and business mileage can be expensed to cover this.

For the rest of your time, you will be doing your thing from your home-office; newsletters to members; bulletins; press releases; social media; and annual / interim reports. This company is growing the communications function and embedding their changing culture, you would notice they distinguish themselves from their competitors when you are researching industry challenges, customer behaviour, their competitors themselves, and the environmental legislation pipeline from our beloved governmental and environmental agencies.

You wouldn't need to work for a Food or agricultural company already, you would just need a background in corporate communications from another company or from agency work for a corporate account.

The salary is between £40,000 and £45,000 + £5500 car allowance, 5% matched pension, 10% bonus (regularly paid).

You would probably live from South England up to Central Scotland and West of the M1 to make the travel easier, but even East Anglia isn't out of the question.
