Q&A with Gary Laverty
Hi Gary, please tell us about how you got started in recruiting?
By accident! I moved over to Manchester after three years in Leeds where I was studying Business Management and Accountancy. I was approached by a company who were looking for graduates in Manchester for a new team, and I went to the interview, got the job and the next day I had started without really knowing what I was doing! However, things started going well – I won Newcomer of the Year and was asked to set up my own department within that business.
How did you start with D R Newitt?
D R Newitt has always worked with Beauty and Personal Care companies and when Andy Banks joined the business before me, he decided this was an area we should focus on more. Andy hired me to work alongside him and build strong relationships with candidates and clients within this sector. This worked for me as I had previously worked for several well-known fragrance and personal care brands, so the beauty industry was an area I was already interested in. Plus, coupled with my love for recruiting it like seemed the perfect role.
What do you think is the main difference recruiting for the Beauty industry?
The main difference I’ve found is the level of passion and enthusiasm candidates feel towards the business they work with. I’ve worked with so many passionate and knowledgeable candidates who know their company and product inside out – you get the sense they don’t just sell their brand, they love it!
Do you have any beauty secrets?!
Drink water, use an eye cream and stay young by letting me find you your next role to take the trouble and stress out of your life!
The award ceremony at 8 Northumberland Avenue in London on 24 October 2019.
